b'COASTALCONVENORSDr Scott HawkenMick Harris Communities around the world from Miami to Mumbai have been built on low lying coastal areas. Often reclaimed from wetland or mangrove environments these communities have evolved in precarious coastal locations to take advantage of livelihood or lifestyle values. However, these values are more than ever at risk in todays engineered climate. Landscapes, natural environments, human settlements and current ways of life are under threat from sea level rise and other climate related changes to coastal environments. New strategies are required to help local communities adapt, defend and/or retreat from coastal hazards. Such approaches aim to increase the environmental security of local communities and reduce the biophysical stresses inherent in current carbon intensive ways of living (Plastrik & Cleveland 2018).
