Prior to Harvard, Professor Rowe was Director of the School of Architecture at Rice University from 1981 to 1985. Professor Rowe’s research and consulting are extensive, diverse and international in scope, including subjects dealing with cultural interpretation and design, the relationship of urban form to economic development, historic conservation, housing provision and resource sustainability. An eminent scholar, critic and lecturer, he is the author, co-author, or editor of eighteen books, including Design Thinking (1987), Making a Middle Landscape (1991), Civic Realism (1997), Architectural Encounters with Essence and Form in Modern China (2002), Emergent Architectural Territories in East Asian Cities (2011) and most recently China’s Urban Communities: Concepts, Contexts and Well-Being (2016). Professor Rowe’s Reid Lecture, first in the UNSW Faculty of Built Environment 2018 Utzon Lecture series, will be followed by: 8.00 for 10.00pm, Leighton Hall & Tyree Hall, Scientia, UNSW Kensington Campus In our twenty-third year, the MUDD Program explored critical urban development and design issues in Sydney, Lisbon and Boston on the theme of time/space transformations of the city – the impact of Very Fast Train vectors on urban space in Sydney and Boston, post-industrial changes to waterfronts in Boston and Lisbon, and cinematic techniques as a dynamic basis for the study of urban form. Our projects reflect the distinctive approach of the UNSW MUDD Program to contemporary urbanism, integrating spatial political economy, the manifestation in urban form of global patterns of capital formation, investment and disinvestment; urban design principles and paradigms, normative models of ‘good city form’ grounded in aesthetic, social and environmental concerns; and urban design as public policy, the intersection of public policy, design principles, the deal-making of the property sector and defence of the public realm. Please join our Initial Sponsors Scott Carver and Zhejiang Jiangong Real Estate Group Co, Ltd – developer of the Euro-Financial Center, Hangzhou – together with companion sponsors LFA, Habitat Planning and pascolbobillier to further the Program’s unique experience for students from Australia and overseas, and contribute to the design culture of Sydney as a sponsor of the special night of the Paul Reid Lecture and MUDD23 Exhibition Opening. Sponsorship packages and donorship opportunities are available at a variety of levels, offering you engagement with the UNSW approach to the integration of urban development and urban design.
