An intensive practical program which teaches how to scale things and view an urban perspective which when integrated into a real design framework gives it a unique character. I was initially worried about my transition from an engineer to urban designer, but the guidance and support given by the faculty to develop my skills really did help me in my transformation and my perspectives and thinking. Most enthusiastically, the great quotation by our professor “Great streets make great cities” is an idea that I will carry with me.

– Epari, Sabari Girish

MUDD is a comprehensive program that embraces a variety of undergraduate professional backgrounds. It not only taught us the basic theory of urban design, but also fostered in us the awareness of good policies and regulations, communication and writing skills, hand-painted and computer-painted practical ability, overall quality and a variety of career adaptability. Most importantly, MUDD provided us with opportunities in overseas countries to explore and learn from relevant design companies. This experience allowed me to understand the city in depth and was valuable for understanding my future urban design work.

– Jin Tian (Tanya)

The MUDD Program offers numerous courses that deal with issues and ways to address key problems within urban design. Learning from an array of past projects, the program investigates ways to understand relevant issues, influences and stakeholders at play. The studio was a great learning experience both personally and professionally. Everything right from the guest lectures, working studios, international studios, walking tours etc has taught me a lot. I really appreciate the amount of work and effort that Professor James Weirick, Jodi Lawton, Brendan Randles and many more put to make every semester a worthwhile experience. It has been a great journey.

– Lata, Kusum

Learning from the MUDD Program my personal achievements included the development of a capacity to ‘read’ the city as an expression of human values as well as gaining an understanding of the evolution of distinctive types of urban design elements. It is a great opportunity to have an International Studio to experience the ‘real’ city. Finally, the most significant achievement understands the professor’s quotation: “Great streets make great cities”.

– Li Hongxu (Paco)

The experience of MUDD started from sketching and movie analysis that helped me to form the concept of urban design in Time, Space and the City. To learn the history, character and the design principles in various cities enriched my experience. My background is Interior Design which is totally different from urban design but I think it was a great experience for me to learn and be a member here.

– Li Mengdi (Nicole)

MUDD23 demonstrates a perspective of views for large-scale design. The course examined the knowledge of students across different disciplines and encouraged us to zoom out to look at a bigger picture of each of the schemes. Individual critical thinking as well as comprehensive expression is required. The International Studio offers an opportunity to work with professions authorities and to experience the actual world of practice.

– Li Ruoyu (Ryan)

MUDD courses are convened with logical thinking. The first studio is innovative, helping us understand the relationships between time, space and the city though movies. It provides a base for understanding cities and learning from precedents. These principles are used in following studios to deal with more complex and long-term urban issues. These principles seem to be formulas, which can be applied into other projects I have not seen before and help me to further understand. I really enjoy and appreciate the experience in MUDD.

– Li Yezi (Evelyn)

A whole three-semester study in the MUDD Program is an intense and memorable experience that broadens my horizons as a landscape architect. As an urban designer, to see the city, understand and learn from the city are important otherwise all our designs exist just on paper. The city is so complicated that its issues cannot be solved by an individual. Working in a team is an essential lesson from the MUDD Program that I can use in my career.

– Li Yilun (Amanda)

Joining the MUDD23 Program is one of the most meaningful things I have done. This program provided me with a lot of unforgettable experiences. In the first semester I experienced a new environment and new way of teaching and so I suffered a lot of unexpected difficulties. However, these bitter moments became a precious memory after I finished my first urban design project.  I learned a lot not only about urban design but also about a new way of communicating and the skills of presentation. During the Lisbon Studio, I was happy to see our team project being recognised by the professors and juries which gave me even more confidence. I think this           experience will lead me to go further in my career and is also a good encouragement when things become difficult in my lifetime.

–  Liu Xianzheng (Razzil)

The MUDD Program offers a great experience during a one and a half year long period of study. Under the guidance of experienced professors, I learnt how to create a great city. Also as group work covers most of our courses, I learned how to cooperate with my team members and to try to finish the job well.  Patience, which is always hard to hold when the task is difficult or huge adjustments are required, is the most important skill I have learnt in this program. I also obtained knowledge from classmates with different backgrounds. To conclude, the MUDD Program is very professional and advanced and it is a wonderful experience.

– Wang Ruoxi (Aria)

The multidisciplinary degree gives a new consideration and understanding of the role of urban design. MUDD gives a priority to the understanding of spatial political economy, urban design paradigms and urban design as public policy. Additionally, MUDD brings an amazing experience in the actual world of practice rather than just in  theoretical grounding and principles.

– Wang Weixi (Frank)

It is an unforgettable experience to participate in the International Studio of the MUDD Program. It is infrequent opportunity for us to go overseas and collaborate with foreign students. We were able to learn different ideas and urban design principles in different countries and cities.

Studying in the MUDD Program helped me understand how to be a good team-worker. The co-operation with team members is extremely significant and good leaders should be adventurous and be clear about their objectives. From managing various subjects and assignments, I learned to balance my study time and make lists about what needed to be finished. The learning and working experiences within the MUDD studio was precious to me.

– Wang Xiuzhu (August)

At the beginning: anticipation, enthusiasm and self-confidence.

In the process: difficulties, challenges and conflicts.

At the end of each story: patience, understanding and tolerance.

When you see your printed Urban Design Framework, you will believe that everything you have done is worthwhile! Your patience, your waiting, your tolerance, your knowledge, your experience, all your giving will be answered at the moment when you see the final work. This is what the MUDD Program means to me.

– Wen Di (Wendy)

As a MUDD23 student, it is an honour to be one of the members of this class.

– Wu Jihai (Sean)

The MUDD Program is a practical course with multiple benefits. It was the first time I joined this kind of program and worked on a yearbook. In this process, I found some skills that I still need to learn and practice. Also, the experience of cooperation with my classmates is very valuable and powerful. On the one hand, it is a conclusion for what we did in these semesters and on the other hand this is a chance for us to practise graphic design skills which will be useful in further careers.

– Wu Yuwei (Vivien)

In the MUDD Program I learned how to be a good team-worker. I acquired how to arrange strategies and design work well and managed to submit student work of a good quality and on time.
